Hidden around Alnitak, the left-most star in Orion’s Belt, are the Flame and Horsehead Nebulae. Too dim to be seen by the naked eye, and just visible with a modest telescope. These Nebulae, like Orion, shroud celestial nurseries where new stars are still being born. These stars illuminate the elemental gas and dust around them, producing brilliant shapes and colors in long exposures images. The Horsehead itself is a dark nebula – thick with dust that blocks out the starlight behind it.
