For 2016, I’m creating a complete solar system of ornaments!
These are all individually hand painted ornaments in sizes from 1 inch (for the moon) up to 5 inches (Jupiter). They start out as typical clear craft ornaments that I got from Michaels (the Sun is an exception here). Larger ornaments are “shatter-proof” plastic. Ornaments smaller than 1.5 inches are glass. I use acrylic based paints. Each ornament goes through a process that takes about 4 days.
Ornaments are first sprayed with a primer coat, then at least 2 passes of a spray painted base coat. This is allowed to set for 24 hours.
After the base coat has set, the brush painting begins. The Earth ornaments take 4 layers with dry time between each layer. Every ornament has at least 2 brush painted layers. Jupiter consists of 4 discreet layers.
Once the final brushed layers have set for another 24 hours, a clear spray overcoat is applied to protect the paint. Mostly, this is a matte finish, with the sun and a few of the Earth and Moon ornaments done with a gloss finish.
The overcoat is allowed to set for another 24 hours before the loop and cap are re-inserted and I add a ribbon to hang each ornament, then package them up! Smaller ornaments are all packaged in clear gift boxes. Larger ornaments (the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn) are packed in white cardboard gift boxes.
Saturn has been an interesting challenge. Below is one of my prototyping efforts using thin acrylic sheets scored using a Silhouette Cameo and cut using an exacto knife wrapped around the ornament. See a completed Saturn below.
