NGC 7293, sometimes called The Eye of God, is a planetary nebula 650 light years away and 2.5 light years across. A planetary nebula is a dying star that fused all of its hydrogen and helium, and doesn’t have the ability to fuse the heavier elements it has created. The star throws off its outer layers, creating the shell of the nebula and leaving behind a white dwarf star. Our own sun will become a planetary nebula like this one in another 5 billion years!
